Spiritual Direction
What is Spiritual Direction?
Spiritual direction is an ancient practice of soul care—a rhythm of intentional conversation where one person (the director) accompanies another (the directee) in listening for God’s movement in their life.
In a session, we’ll slow down. We’ll pay attention. We’ll explore the deeper currents of your life and faith—not to fix or control them, but to notice them with reverence and curiosity.
Sessions may include:
Times of silence and stillness
Reflective questions
Conversation about your spiritual practices, life events, or dreams
Integration of scripture, art, or embodied wisdom
Prayer, as desired
You don’t need to be “religious” or have everything figured out. Spiritual direction is for anyone who longs to live more deeply rooted in the sacred, regardless of tradition, background, or belief.
Frequently asked questions
What is spiritual direction?
Spiritual direction is a sacred space where you can explore your relationship with God, notice the movement of the Spirit in your life, and grow in spiritual awareness. It's not about giving advice or fixing problems—it's about being companioned by someone who listens deeply, prays with you, and helps you discern God’s presence and invitation in your life.
Do I have to be religious or Christian?
No. While many spiritual directors work from a particular faith tradition, spiritual direction is open to all seekers. I personally offer spiritual direction rooted in the Christian contemplative tradition, but I honor each person’s journey and experience of the Sacred. If you're open to listening for the divine in your life, you're welcome here.
What happens during a session?
A typical session lasts about 50–60 minutes. You’ll bring whatever is stirring in your heart—questions, longings, struggles, joys, or even silence. The spiritual director will listen attentively, ask gentle questions, and create space for reflection and prayer. It’s not structured like counseling or teaching—it’s more like a sacred conversation.
Is everything I say confidential?
Yes. Confidentiality is sacred in spiritual direction. What you share stays between us, unless there is a legal or safety obligation to report (e.g., harm to yourself or others). Otherwise, you can speak freely and trust that your story is held with reverence.
How is this different from counseling or therapy?
While both offer a supportive relationship, spiritual direction is focused on your relationship with God, not on diagnosing or treating mental health issues. If you’re seeking healing for trauma, anxiety, or depression, therapy may be a better fit—or spiritual direction may complement that work by addressing the spiritual dimension of your journey.
How much does it cost?
Fees vary from director to director. I suggest a fee of $75, but a sliding scale is available, if necessary. I offer a free initial consultation and can discuss payment options that honor both your situation and the value of the work.
How often do sessions take place?
Most people meet once a month, though some prefer to meet more or less frequently depending on their season of life. It’s flexible and can be adjusted to fit your rhythm.
What if I don't know what to say?
That’s okay. You don’t have to come with an agenda. Silence is welcome in spiritual direction. Sometimes the most powerful sessions are those where we simply sit together in stillness and notice what arises.
How do I know if this is right for me?
If you're longing to grow spiritually, feeling spiritually dry or stuck, navigating a transition, or simply craving space to listen for God, spiritual direction might be a gift for you. The best way to know is to try a session and see how it feels.
